Software (continued) Note Taking Comprehensive MyNotesKeeper My Notes Keeper is a superb note-taker and information outliner for Windows 9x/2000/XP/Vista/7. It allows you to store all of your notes and information in an easy-to-use outline, where you can quickly find what you need. You really have to give this application a go to discover how useful, comprehensive and powerful this is. They are ideal for so many little cut-paste-copy tasks. Office Applications Word Processing OpenOffice OpenOffice has, and will probably always remain, my absolute favourite for word processing. In my view, it's much more logically laid out than Microsoft Word - and the fact that it's entirely free is a real bonus. Take a little time to learn the 'OO' way of working and you'll never regret it. Go to openoffice.org for more information and download options. AbiWord AbiWord is a free word processing program similar to Microsoft Word. It is suitable for a wide variety of word processing tasks. abisource.com for more details. Spreadsheet OpenOffice Calc Always my first choice! Presentation OpenOffice Impress Another great application from the OpenOffice suite. Page Layout (DTP) QuarkXPress This is the 'big-boys' solution to page layout since it's horrendously expensive (in my opinion) but if you've got deep pockets, and you have really serious DTP work to undertake, then at least you'll be using an 'industry-standard' application that is very solid and very comprehensive. Go to quark.com for details. Adobe InDesign Adobe's InDesign is a very good DTP system, well capable of undertaking big jobs as well as handling the one-page flyer design with ease. It costs a tidy sum but you get a lot of power for your money, and being from Adobe, it's got a solid parenthood. Go to adobe.com for details. Scribus Even though this is a totally free page-layout application, it's capable of doing a lot of solid work. Go to scribus.net for more details. Web Page Design Commercial Dreamweaver CS3 This is the 'industry standard' web site design application. Originally from Macromedia but now taken over my Adobe. I can be quite daunting to anyone starting out, so you need to invest a lot of time and practice to take full advantage of this very powerful application but once mastered, it's hard to find anything else that comes close. Free KompoZer KompoZer is designed to be extremely easy to use, making it ideal for non-technical computer users who want to create an attractive, professional-looking web site without needing to know HTML or web coding. This is a free application that well worth taking a look at. Go to kompozer.net for details and download. Anti-Virus and Anti-Malware AVG Anti-Virus Free AVG Free is a real gem. Used (and much preferred) by tens of thousands of PC users, it's a 'must-have' application that will do a superb job of keeping your PC virus-free. Go to free.avg.com to learn more and download. Ad-Aware Protection against spyware, blended malware, trojans, rootkits, hijackers, keyloggers, and much more. Go to lavasoft.com for details and download. Sound Related Audacity Audacity is free sound recording and editing system that I find especially easy to use so I have no problem recommending it. Utilities Screen Capture MWSnap MWSnap is a small yet powerful Windows program for snapping (capturing) images from selected parts of the screen. Clipboard Extender ClipMagic ClipMagic is free clipboard software (free for non-commercial use). It extends the Windows simple clipboard facility into something really useful.
